'Bollywood In The D' Brings Indian Musical Extravaganza To Detroit

May 18th, 2012

The music of Bollywood is coming to Detroit.

Bollywood is the nickname given to the cinema industry in Mumbai, India, which is known worldwide for its colorful musical productions. On Saturday, the Michigan Philharmonic will team up with music professionals and singers from India to present a multimedia extravaganza celebrating this tradition at Detroit’s Music Hall.

“The ‘Bollywood in the D’ concert brings with it a message of ethnic and musical fusion on the stage,” said producer Narendra Sheth, in a release. “Cultural awareness is always a goal; the real impact will be the life enrichment.”

The American-Indian producer and director has produced Indian concerts for more than 40 years and has used his radio show “Geetmala” to promote cultural dialogue across Southeast Michigan.

The production will feature Bollywood songs from films dating from the 1950s to the present, such as “Slumdog Millionaire” and the 1969 movie “Aradhana.” Songs will include medleys of a variety of styles, including east/west fusion, classical and instrumental Bollywood music.

“Bollywood in the D” begins Saturday, May 19, 2012 at 7 p.m. at the Music Hall Center for Performing Arts in downtown Detroit. For more information visit www.bollywoodinthed.com.

Daily Blender » DISARONNO's “Mixing Star” Offers Bartenders The …

May 18th, 2012

It seems as though it is the season for cocktail competitions. Even though they surely run year-round, like their culinary compatriots, a whole host of comps have rolled through Portland over the past few months, highlighting spirits from light to dark, as well as local mixers worthy of note.

The latest was DISARONNO’s “Mixing Star” competition, where nearly twenty competitors from up and down the West Coast descended on Portland’s Spirit of ’77 bar to mix away for a chance to appear in a Bollywood film. A number of the city’s best stepped behind the stick for a chance to ascend in the rankings and make their on-screen debut, including Mindy Kucan of Beaker & Flask, recently named as a nominee for the 2012 Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards for Best Restaurant Bar; Junior Ryan of Clyde Common, another TOTC Spirited Awards nominee; Sarah Rehmann, a Midwest transplant and one to watch; Adam Robinson of The Bent Brick and Rum Club; and Nick Keane, of the newly-opened Parish.

But in a whirlwind of mixing comps, what made the DISARONNO event such a draw for these local bartenders?

“The DISARONNO comp is specifically focused on personalities, the unique characteristics that make each competitor stand out from the rest of the crowd,” said Nathan Gerdes, one of three Portland “Mixing Star” finalists who will fly down to Las Vegas this summer to compete in the next round – and a bartender repeatedly recognized in competitions like this. “With all the recent concentration on mixology and cocktails themselves, it’s fun to get back to entertaining and interacting with our guests; it’s an important skill for a bartender and that’s what this competition was based on.”

And while it seems as though there’s a new competition popping up every week, there are always bartenders interested in submitting their latest creations.

“For me they are essential to developing new skills. Most bartenders will only work a handful of bars in their career and since there is no central educational system for our industry, bartenders are rarely exposed to outside information,” says Gerdes. “I see competitions as a way for us to all come together and learn from each other. Comps are where you showcase your best skills, newest ideas, craziest tools; competitors bring their A game, what better place to gain inspiration and share ideas, techniques, and secrets. Every time I compete I walk away with some new idea or concept thanks to a fellow competitor, and I hope they do the same.”

As mentioned, Portland winners Mindy Kucan, Victoria D’Amato Moran, and Nathan Gerdes will head to Vegas for the next round of the “Mixing Star” competition, before additional rounds are held in Berlin, Germany. The overall winner will then be flown to Mumbai, India, for their on-screen appearance. Good luck, all!

Strong female characters

Strong female characters

In an industry that’s dominated by men and male-driven films, it’s always refreshing to see a movie with a strong female character. Which is why I was especially disappointed when Parineeti Chopra‘s character Zoya from Ishaqzaade turned out to be such a let down despite strong characterization in the beginning. Regardless, that got me thinking about some female characters from recent times who have shown great character development. Want to know my favourites?

1. Aisha from Wake Up Sid (played by Konkona Sen Sharma)

Aisha from Wake Up Sid

Aisha from Wake Up Sid

Aisha is one of my favourite characters, mostly because of how realistic she is. She has her strengths and she has her flaws, and everyone can find a little bit of Aisha in themselves. She’s the independent woman with big hopes and dreams of making it on her own, and when Sid (Ranbir Kapoor) gets kicked out of his house, she’s the one who comes to his rescue by allowing him to move in with her.

2. Vidya from Kahaani (played by Vidya Balan)

Vidya Bagchi

Vidya Bagchi

Vidya Bagchi is one of the most badass female characters in Bollywood. Even though she’s suffered great loss, she’s determined to reach her goal and won’t let anyone stop her. She’s up against countless number of men during the film, but still holds her own, overpowering them all with a glare, sharp comment or just sheer resilience.

3. Geet from Jab We Met (played by Kareena Kapoor)

Geet from Jab We Met

Geet from Jab We Met

Geet is a spunky girl who believes one should follow their heart – according to her, even if things turn out badly, it will be okay because you were the one who made the decision, and that’s the entire point. She enjoys life to the fullest, believes that love trumps everything, and solves every issue with a smile (and a little craziness). Even after she suffers an emotional setback, she doesn’t go running back home; instead, she tries to be self-sufficient and learns that every action has consequences.

4. Rhea from Hum Tum (played by Rani Mukherjee)

Rhea’s a feisty girl who stands up for herself. She resists Karan’s (Saif Ali Khan) attempts at flirting, refuses to back down from an argument, and doesn’t hesitate in slapping him when he plants an unwanted kiss on her. Even after she experiences loss, she powers through, running her own business and creating her own little world.

5. Roma from Don & Don 2 (played by Priyanka Chopra)

Roma from Don, Don2

Roma from Don & Don 2

Roma’s a girl on the warpath – she wants revenge for the death of her brother, and she’s willing to fight the Don to get it. She becomes an Interpol officer and won’t let the men steal the show – when there’s a fight, she jumps into the midst and is willing to battle it out.

What are some of your favourite female Bollywood characters?

10 Most Eagerly Awaited Films In Bollywood History | NG

May 12th, 2012

Foreward – This post is not based on data and statistics but general media perception. any or all of these films and their place in the countdown can be challenged.

10 – ra1- blame it on the fact that sharukh khan usually doesnt do any ‘mega budget’ films (apart from ra1 i can only think of k3g and to a lesser extent kabh alvida na kehan as hugely budgtted) but sharukh khan’s only fim in the count down is at quite a low place. or it cud be the fact that in the 6 years that ra1 took in making, box office equations had totally changed and not only had salman established his clear supremacy over sharukh but even aamir was (unfairly) claiming it. (akshay has never been anywhere in the picture.) but still, with the help of a 35 cr marketing blitzkrieg sharukh manged to create huge hype and anticipation for ra1, making it one of the top 10 most awaited films, even if at the lowest ladder.

9 – roop ki raani choron ka raja- this one also was more forced by hype rather than genuine star power and anticipation in public. somewhere in the late 80s anil kapoor wass seriously trying to become no1 star of bollywood and invested all his and brother boney kapoor’s money in a stupid film. it was a boxoffice disaster but untill it released, it was highly awaited.

8 – hum aapke hain kaun- much as sooraj barjatya tried to keep it low key, the very fact that it was the second film of the atbb maine pyaar kiya filmmaker and star, and the fact that they were coming together with madhuri dixit, riding high on back to back hits like dil, beta, saajan etc made it a much awaited fim. sooraj released the film without any publicity and with 4-5 prints (at the hight of video piracy and beginning of cable piracy) and still it went on to become the second biggest hit in the history of bollywood.

7. coolie – amitabh bachchan’s accident on the sets of coolie was the main factor for its hype though it was marred to a certain extent as bachchan had had three huge flops in the year 1983 (nastik, mahaan, pukaar) justr before coolie. still the gossip that the film will show in which shot bachchan was hurt (and it did) apart from the fact that it was after all a manmohan desai-amitabh bachchan film made it into a higly awaited film. and yes it was a superhit.

6- shaan – it was the next film of sholay director. it had a huge budget and had international level technical values (yes in those days) it had a huge star cast and introduced a new villain, expected to be next gabbar. shaan had all the right reasons for it to be the most eagerly awaited films. however the film laid an egg at the box office when it released. later apparently it recovered some of that money in reruns.

5 – leader- dilip kumar after ganga jamuna and mughal e aazam, in an amibitious venture, supposed to make a strong socio political statement, vyjyanti mala as his heroine, leader had everything going for it. alas! the content was weak and the film did not perform any wonders at the boxoffice.

4. ek tha tiger – never before in the history of bollywood has a film become so eagerly awaited (apart from the top film in this countdown) merely on the strenght of its leading hero’s star power. ETT director has any track record (kabul express and new york were hardly blockbusters) its not one of the hugely buddgetted films like ra1 or even veer (by salman standards. like sharukh even salman and aamir dont waste money on hugely budgtted overambitious projects that was the wont of amitabh bachchan and anil kapoor)  nor does it have any other hype associated with it (controversy, topical theme, or any scandal etc) still on the basis of just one teaser, it can be safely said that ETT is one of the most eagerly awaited films in bollywood history, merely on the basis of salman’s star power.

3.  moter india- after films like aan and andaaz when a man called mehboob khan announces his most ambitious venture, the whole world sits up and takes notice. and mother india lived up to all the anticipation and expectations, making it one of the biggest alltime blockbuster (no 4) in bollywood history.

2. mughal e aazam- k asif had never made any films before (nor completed any after) mughal e aazam. he had been making mughal e aazam for 12 years. there was so much news about mughal e aazam, about asif having to sell his house for funds,  abaout the sheesh mahal set, about madhgubala being deliberately kept chained for a song on dilip kumar’s behest that it easily became the most eagerly awaited film of that time. and boy! did it live upto the promise. a film so grand, so artistic, so beautiful, so powerfull, so impactfull had never seen before that and there were ppl at ticket windows for a week in advance, beds, quilts and all. and wen the film released it broke all records and till date remains the 3rd biggest hit in bollywood history.

1 – shahenshah – amitabh bachchan was the top star through early 80s. and he had joined politics in 1984 and since 1986 had not haad a single release, except a special appearence in ‘kaun jeeta kaun haara’ and ‘jalwa’. there had been political victory and scandal for him in the meanwhile with him getting embroiled in bofors payback controversy and resigning from his MP seat. and he had mastered the art of media management. all of this combined made shahenshah the most eagerly awaited film ever of bollywood. there were police at most cinemas to stop any acts of violence from ticket seekers. apparently when the advance booking opened on monday morning for the fraday release there were a minimum of 2000 ppl at every single ticket counter in the country. all this at the peak of video piracy. however the film left a lot to be desired and within a week, settled to very ho-hum boxoffice verdict.

Amitabh Bachchan – The Greatest Actor Ever in Bollywood History …

May 9th, 2012

Amitabh Bachchan – The Greatest Actor Ever in Bollywood History (Ezine Ready)

The ones who may not rightly agree with the title of the article are probably the ones who love criticizing and are paid of the same. Of course, everyone has their own favorites, but hardly anyone would disagree to the fact that Amitabh Bachchan is one of the best actors that Bollywood has ever seen. The actor made his acting debut in the movie Saat Hindustani directed by Khwaja Ahmad Abbas. Since then there was no turning back for the angry young man. Writing about the awards and honors he achieved throughout his lifetime would surely require a book with a 1000 pages.

None of the latest Bollywood movies can ever compare to the ones ‘The big B’ acted in during the early 70s and the 80s. However, the sun is still shining bright. His recent movies too are doing great at the box office. No doubt, the actor did witness a good number of ups and downs during his entire career, but he gracefully succeed in bouncing back and the entire industry honors him for the same. Take for instance, the injury he suffered in the year 1982, while filming Coolie. Many thought he would never ever return to the silver screen, but he did, and in fact gained a huge amount of popularity.

Apart from working in movies, ‘The big B’ also tried has hands at politics but failed to achieve a huge amount of success. In 2000, people saw him in a brand new ‘avatar’ on Indian television. He was the host of a popular television game show named ‘Kaun Banega Corepati’ and Indian version of the British game show named ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?’. The show gained an amazing response from the viewers.

Singing seems to be Amitabh’s another passion. He has sung a couple of songs for Bollywood movies. Though not the best, these songs certainly were able to get a huge audience on their toes. ‘The big B’ seemed to be the best in everything he did during his entire career. However, the actor at times also found himself surrounded with numerous legal charges and allegations. But, as usual he easily succeeded in wiping them all out of his way.

Although you may see too little of ‘Amitabh Bachchan’ in the latest Bollywood movies, you will surely hear a lot about him in magazines and tabloids – both positive and negative reviews. The actor seems to be in news even when he is not working. How much more popularity can an actor gain?

‘The big B’ will now be making his mark in Hollywood in the movie named ‘The Great Gatsby’, directed by Baz Luhrmann. The cast includes Leonardo DeCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Isla Fisher, Joel Edgerton, Tobey Maguire, Callan McAuliffe and Elizabeth Debicki. The movie will be out in theatres this Christmas, so until then hold your breath. You can get more such information on various movies site and muvi.com one such site.
